Shipmate of the Month

Tharon Howard

Tharon Howard 53

I was born on June 28th 1932 to Abbie and Robbie Howard of Pink Hill NC. I attended Pink Hill school and entered the Navy in 1950 at the age of 18. I enjoyed the the time I spent serving my country where I had the privilege to meet people that are still my friends today. I was discharged from the Navy on the 31st day of July 1954. I married my wife , Willie Lee on the 27th day of June 1955. We have enjoyed 54 years of marriage and have 7 wonderful children, two daughters and five sons. We have also have been blessed with nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. After leaving the Navy I worked in HVAC, operated two restaurants, and farmed. On Feb. 20th of 2009, I had open heart surgery and I am doing very well. I am already out there on the boat fishing with my sons which is one of my favorite past times .Some years ago I accepted the Lord Jesus as my savior and hope all my Shipmates will do the same .
God Bless, Love You All
Tharon Howard.

The following is a letter we got from Tharon's Nephew. It's about Tharon and it  ....  well it speaks for itself:

Dear Paul, I am Bobby Blanton, Nephew (by marriage) to Tharon Howard. Uncle Tharon and Aunt Willie gave me a call asking if I could scan a picture (see photo on right)  for them and send to you. So, please find it attached to this E-mail. I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to computers so if there is a problem let me know and I will have my daughter give me a pointer or two!
My wife, Shelby and I were very honored and privileged to have been able to attend the USS Mispillion reunion last year('08) in Chareston, SC. It was the first for us and we were able to attend with a party of eight (to include Uncle Tharon and Aunt Willie). How wonderful to meet fellow veterans (I was Army-6 years), to meet Chris Munson, to learn of the ships Queen...Penny and Thunder Ranch(I received a card from Penny just two days ago, our daughter lives in MO and attends the church in Branson where Penny goes; our daughter also photographed Penny's wedding)---Small world huh!!!!
Paul, you have chosen a very fine man for shipmate of the month! I know Tharon Howard to be a man of the highest caliber in character and moral compass. We would be very hard pressed to find many clean-spirited men such as him in this day and time. Although it may seem that the world is decaying around us, there are still some who hold fast to their faith in Christ...Tharon Howard is unshakable. He stands only about 5'3" and I am 6'4"...yet and still, I find that I can only look "up" to him and never "down"!!!!!!!! He is quiet yet jovial and friendly. He is not a fancy person, just good "down home folk". He is a God fearing man and yet, a "man's man. He and Aunt Willie have raised seven wonderful children and have been married 54 years this year.

Tharon Howard 53

Uncle Tharon remembers his times aboard the Mispillion with tears in his eyes whenever he speaks of Her. He is grateful and proud to have been able to serve beside those such as are listed in Her ship's registries.

Uncle Tharon entered the Navy September 25th, 1950 and exited July 30, 1954 with the rate of "Seaman". If you need further information, feel free to contact me directly at 252-568-6462 or by E-mail.. redbug4meandshe@yahoo.com We live only about 7 minutes from Tharon and Willie so I will try and give you any help I can.

Thank you for your service to our great nation and thank you for your service to the Mispillion organization. May God's richest blessings be upon you, your family, the Mispillion family and America!
Cordially, Bobby D. Blanton
Please. I invite all of his Friends, Family and Shipmates to post a story and their feelings about him on the communications board. I just received this message from the Adams Class Veterans Association "ACVA".  The ACVA is attempting to acquire the "USS Charles F. Adams DDG-2" from the government in order to make a museum ship out of her. A team of former Navy members conducted a survey on board the ship to ascertain whether or not she was fit to be made into a museum.  CLICK HERE to see their preliminary findings. USS Charles F. Adams DDG-2 is the last surviving Adams Class Guided Missile Destroyer that is any where near salvageable.  It is hoped that the ACVA will be successful in their endeavor.

James McEachin Wins Best Film Short Award at 2007 GI Film Festival
June 01, 2007 Entertainment: Film News

(PRLEAP.COM) The 2007 GI Film Festival Awards (GIFF), announced May 28, 2007 in Washington, DC named OLD GLORY written, produced, and directed by James McEachin, as the 2007 winner in the Short Film category.

The winners of the 2007 GI Film Festival (GIFF) Awards were announced by festival Directors Brandon Millett and Laura Law-Millett at the Ronald Reagan International Trade Center in Washington, DC. GIFF exclusively celebrates the successes and sacrifices of the American military through the medium of film. The three-day festival was held May 26-28 2007, Memorial Day Weekend. Festival participants include R. Lee Ermey (MAIL CALL, FULL METAL JACKET), Billy Blanks (founder of Tae-Bo), Pat Boone, and Gary Sinise (FOREST GUMP, CSI) who was honored with the 2007 GIFF Spirit Award for his excellence and commitment to honoring soldiers and veterans.
As the winner in the Short Film category, OLD GLORY proudly displays McEachin’s mission of commemorating those who have served and are serving in the United States Armed Forces. OLD GLORY profoundly captures a dramatic sense of patriotism in a cinematic portrayal that pays tribute to America in a way only a Silver Star and Purple Heart veteran, accomplished actor, and award-winning author dares.

An Old Soldier. A New Mission. One mission accomplished.

LOOK WHAT DAVE SIBLEY FOUND AND SENT US:

Steve, I found my official papers on the grounding. WE came in on the 26 November, 1962. Grounding occurred November 27, 1962. The ship is aground at 0325(11/27/1962). Gary Jones took soundings using the lead line just before G. B. Hunt LTJG----OOD said to log, ship is aground. Redlead Ringness sure was a horses Ass, court marshalling quite a few.

Bridge Personal At The Time Of The Grounding
W. M. Ringness Captain---------------C.O.
Pilot Riego
J. V. Phares LTCDR---------------------X.O.
G. B. Hunt LTJG--------------------------OOD
W. T. Ward LTJG-------------------------Navigator
R. B. Goldman Ens.---------------------JOOD
K. M. Royalty Ens.----------------------Assist. Navigator

Piloting Men
M. L. Rose QML--------------------------Recorder
L. L. Brown SN----------------------------Stbd. Bearing Taker
D. W. Sibley QM3-----------------------Port Bearing Taker & Quartermaster of the watch

The foundings in the hearing December 28, 1962 also stated----The presence or absence of navigation aids had nothing to do with the grounding.
Hope this clears up the matter. No mention of the Texan in the report--he probably got ELFed.

Your friend & shipmate,
Dave Sibley

The following link is about one of our shipmates, Brad Lanich. Brad served on the Mispillion in supply 1973-1974. He has colon cancer and is undergoing treatment for it. Please take a minute and read what his wife wrote in the journal. I went to see Brad about a month ago. Please remember him in your prayers.

This letter to Steve Dengler from Dave Latimer has some very good info on asbestos cancer.

Hi Steve,
Thank you for taking time out of your day to reply!
As you may have noticed, I am with the Mesothelioma & Asbestos Awareness Center. We aim to provide the most current and accurate information regarding asbestos exposure and its link to mesothelioma cancer. As you know, many Navy veterans were unknowingly exposed to asbestos while working in shipyards, and while onboard ships and submarines. I chose to contact you today because the USS Mispillion is one of those vessels. When built at Sun Shipyard, asbestos was used as an insulator for many parts of the engine room and boiler room.
That said, in an effort to spread awareness about this terrible disease, I am trying to reach all those who understand this devastating disease and the importance to get good information out there. I would invite you to visit our site, especially our Navy section at www.maacenter.org/veterans . I am confident you will find that we have compiled a large resource for those who may be suffering from the disease or have family members who are. I would like to share this resource with your browsers, and would ask you to point a link to some portion of our navy section that you feel would be the most pertinent to your browsers. (Possibly our Sun Shipyard Page - http://www.maacenter.org/jobsites/shipyards/sunshipbuilding.php)
I look forward to your reply and feedback. Thank you for all the work you do.
Kind Regards,
Dave Latimer

Christening Of The USS Mispillion

This is a photo of my maternal grandparents Dr. Charles Edward Feddeman and Ethel Margurite Coe Feddeman. My grandmother is christening the USS Mispillion. The pin that she is wearing and another like it on my grandfather’s lapel is a commemorative pin and is around here someplace. When I find it I will scan it and send you an image. Interestingly, my sister still has the box that the champagne came with. It was used to store doll clothes when we were children. There are other pictures in the family collection of the christening day and people in attendance. When I come across any I will send them along if you like.

Get your name engraved in bricks

USS Mispillion Shipmates (or those of any other ship) can get their names engraved in bricks.  The bricks make up a couple of walkways at the Navy Memorial Park in Long Beach, California.

It's a good chance to literally engrave in stone your service or in memoriam of another person.  I made sales of some bricks with several more outstanding until the purchasers can think of what they want engraved on them. CLICK HERE FOR MORE DETAILS
