This letter was sent to us by Dave Farmer
and he received it from Tony.
Hi Dave, Nice to hear from you, check
the site cant believe you found a
picture of me. It's been a long time being out of the
Navy but it was fun at
that time. I was thinking of shipping over I ask only if
can go to the river
patrol boat. They said ok but think about it so when I
went back to the comp
all the guys ask what did you tell them, that I wanted
to ship over and those
guys talked me right out of it so I went home. I had a
job before I went in
the Navy I was getting drafted so I went to the Navy,
got the job back and
just retired about 3 years ago with 38 years, I worked
for the city of New York
dept of environmental protection. in upstate New York
watershed. We protected res
and supply the city with all there drinking water. Nice
job. Two years later
I met my wife and got married, built a new home and had
boy & girl married 27
years and about 9 years she passed away and it was hard.
I got remarried
about 5 years ago to a very nice woman and every thing
is great. For
pictures I had a lot my wife did something with them
before she passed away
and I have been looking for them for years can't find
them. All I got is my sea bag
and a Zippo lighter with Mispillion on it and around 4
picture that ill send and
I am still looking for those pictures. Well that was a
little info on me. Hope I
didn't bore you with it. Tony

On the left are photos of me
and my current bike along with another of me (on
the right) with a high school buddy and also ex
Navy man who now lives in Petaluma, California
that I visited with last August. I also sent you
a copy, in another email, of the mid-log I wrote
from 1966.
PLEASE CLICK HERE TO SEE IT. I was
told it was "Navy tradition" to do the midnight
watch log in poetic form, and being the obedient
sailor I was, this was the result. The shipmate
that was my relief was actually named Prince
Counts. Maybe you can research and find out
where he is and what he is up to currently.
Wonder if he would remember this log!
As I told you on the phone last night, it was a
very huge disappointment to find that Richard
had passed before I got to visit him in June. I
hope you were able to find the obituary in the
Albuquerque newspaper. The date was 6/23/10.
After service together on the Mispillion, I
found Richard in Woodlake, Cal. which was about
11 miles from the town of Porterville, where I
had been assigned by Thrifty Drug as my first
store on August 3, 1970. Rich (I called him Gus)
was working in a car battery manufacturing plant
at that time. My wife and I had invited him to
our house for dinner several times, and we would
relive old times on the ship. He went to Arizona
for a job opportunity as a DJ and radio
announcer and later went to work for the
railroad. We had lost contact from that time
until about 3 1/2 years ago, when we
reconnected. Gus was really great at writing
letters and sent me one about every 6 months. I,
in turn, would call him and keep him updated
with my life. I travel a lot on my motorcycle
and tried to get him to meet up with me 3
different times when I would be within 100 miles
or so of him, but, he always had a reason why he
couldn't make it. Well, this last time I
actually went to his house and he had the
"ultimate" reason for not seeing me! His family
was kind enough to allow me to be the first to
sign his guestbook for gus's final services. May
he rest in peace! |
| I have been married since
05/20/1971 to Barbara and boast of my 3 adult
children, 5 Grandchildren and 3 (soon to be 4)
Greatgrandchildren. I have worked as a sales
consultant at Saturn of Bakersfield since
07/22/1996 after a 25 year career with Thrifty
Drug. I enjoy riding my motorcycle immensely and
functioned as the President of the "Bakersfield
Streetriders" motorcycle club from 2003 to 2009.
I am an active member of the local chapter of
the Society for the Preservation and
Encouragement of Barbershop Singing in America (SPEBSQSA),
the "Bakersfield Golden Empire Chorus" and still
perform with a quartet named "Phonic Boom" on
occasion as well as "Time in a Bottle". While I
was in bootcamp and MMA school at Great Lakes,
Ill., I sang in the Navy "Blue Jacket Choir".
After that, I was TAD to the USS Piedmont AD-17
in San Diego until I was sent to Nuclear Power
School at Mare Island, Ca. I then was assigned
to Nuclear Prototype School in Atomic city, Id.
I was then assigned to the USS Mispillion in
March of "66 and never served on a Nuclear ship.
I was supposed to be TAD awaiting the commission
of the USS Kennedy, which was going to be a
Nuclear Carrier, but was conventionally powered
after all was said and done. Consequently, I
served on the Mispillion to the end of my career
in Oct. of '68. I was forgiven of the 2 year
extension required to go to Nuke school because
I had never been assigned to a Nuclear billet. |

Below is an actual copy that my
shipmate, Richard Gutierrez, made of my Ship's log entry
for the Mid-watch on the U.S.S. Mispillion, AO-105 on
12/31/1966.
This New Year's Eve I made the scene;
San Pedro, dude, that's what I mean!
Now I mean to say we're at dead screw
with auxiliaries steamin' to supply the crew
with steam and juice to keep 'em hot,
and dad that's comin' from #1 pot.

THE REST OF THE LOG ENTRY. |
