Shipmate of the Month

Congratulations
to the shipmate of the month
Alfred George Puppo

I enlisted in the Navy in December of 1945 at the age of 17 years young.

I went to Boot Camp at Great Lakes Ill.

I caught the USS Mispillion in Tsingtao China in April of 1946. Thereafter we made 3 trips to Rastanura Saudi Arabia to take on oil. During this cruise we had ports of call in Singapore, Tsingtao, Shangri, Hong Kong, Manila, Subic Bay and Yokosuka.

In November 1947 we sailed into San Pedro where I was discharged ( 2 year hitch). Then I returned home to New York.

I enrolled at New York trade school to learn sign painting. After graduating I moved to southern California. I went to work for Foster & Kleiser outdoor advertising Co. After several years I moved to San Jose (still with the same company). Where I met the Love of my life, Carmen. I returned to southern California and got an apartment and returned to San Jose and married Carmen in 1955 then we settled in southern California

We proceed to have two Sons, Steven & Kelly. My oldest Son Steven passed away from cancer 21 years ago.

While working for Foster & Kleiser I became a journeyman sign and pictorial Artist. After 20 years I went to work for my local union. Which I had been very active in. I held many positions in my Union. President, Vice President, Organizer, Business Agent and Business Manager.

After 13 years I left and work in the Decorating show business, as a sign and Graphics Artist. I also ran crews in setting up trade show exhibits. I retired in 1990.

I built a studio at home where I paint oil paintings. I joined the Glendale Art Association and was a member for several years. I enjoy painting in oil, Hunting with a bow and arrow (DUH. Guess I need an arrow). Fishing, Riding my Harley and e-mailing all my Shipmates. After serving on the Mispillion and visiting all the countries we were able to visit I think I am a better person and for sure one who loves His Country more than ever.

God Bless all My Shipmates and God Bless America. Forefather Al.

Please. I invite all of Al's Friends, Family and Shipmates to post a story and their feelings about him on the communications board.
